September 16, 2014: My sense of smell is really good, and I have a huge catalog of scent memories. So I’m delighted to celebrate National Play Doh Day, honoring a product with a distinctive smell that makes me think fondly of childhood. (I’ve heard of a number of people who have eaten Play Doh; I myself never have.) It’s also Guacamole Day, so there’s something I’ll eat instead of modeling clay. I don’t know that I’d ever had guacamole before I moved to Florida. Certainly, I didn’t try it until my 30s. I still don’t care for avocados on their own, because they have a really weird potassium-rich banana-like odor and taste to them. But when mixed with lemon juice and garlic, they’re all right in my book.
