September 1, 2014: American Chess Day; National Cherry Popover Day; Great Bathtub Race

September 1, 2014: So even though it’s not doodled, happy Labor Day to all of you Americans out there. Every time the holiday rolls around, I recite this Garfield poem from my childhood. Now, to the doodle! Today is American Chess Day, so I guess that means to heck with the rest of the world. No chess for you today. Queen’s pawn to DISS!

In food news, it’s National Cherry Popover Day today. Food Confessions: never had a popover. Of any flavor. Last but not least, it’s the Great Bathtub Race day in Nome, Alaska. Apparently, it happens every Labor Day. And in reading this old article about the race, I totally want to participate. (Though I don’t want it enough to actually travel to Alaska.)
