October 9, 2013: If only Vikings used fire extinguishers instead of swords, history might be very different. Today is Leif Erikson Day, an actual US government-recognized observance. Even though his name may have been spelled Ericson. Anyhoo, it celebrates the accomplishments of Americans of Nordic descent. Moldy Cheese Day, on the other hand, is not a government affair. But who needs government interference in order to get down and dirty with stinky cheese? Today is also Fire Prevention Day, the cornerstone of Fire Prevention Week, which has been around here in the US since 1925 (Thanks, Calvin Coolidge!). So don’t burn things, especially your moldy cheese. Fire bad.
