October 8, 2013: Today begins International Cephalopod Awareness Week, which we begin with Octopus Day – always the 8th, because … octopus. Be prepared for a couple of additional cephalopods as the week goes on. In addition to the octopus himself, today is a trifecta of things I’ve never eaten, as it’s also Pierogi Day and Fluffernutter Day. I’ve only ever seen pierogi for sale in booths at various food festivals, but I’ve never tried one. As for a fluffernutter, as I understand it, it’s a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme on white bread; it seems to primarily be a northeastern United States thing. I’ve always preferred my peanut butter with grape jelly, and I’ve never owned a jar of marshmallow creme.
