October 19, 2013: This is how I picture the origin of Sweetest Day: a candy company executive says to his staff, “Valentine’s Day has been a boon for the greeting card industry, but that’s not enough. We should really throw down a holiday on the other end of the calendar, with the sole purpose of selling candy for the purposes of romantic wooing.” Yes, yes, his underlings all cry! How about the third Saturday in October? PERFECT! (You can probably guess my attitude about this holiday. Feel free to consider that same attitude in play for Valentine’s Day. And yes, I know that Sweetest Day has been around since 1921. Still not a fan.)
It’s also Old Farmers Day, which celebrates the old ways of farming, not necessarily farmers themselves who have reached an advanced age. But I figured that older farmers deserve heart-shaped boxes full of candy too. It’s also World Toy Camera Day, which has been made easier for the masses since the invention of filter apps (my personal favorite is Streamzoo, because it lets you apply separate filters and borders).
