November 27, 2013: Bavarian Cream Pie Day; Tie One On Day

November 27, 2013: Two days in a row of living pastries! Now that we’re into the end of November, the food holidays are really picking up. Expect to see quite a few foods celebrated in December. Today is Bavarian Cream Pie Day, celebrating a kind of custardy pie topped with whipped cream. It’s on my list of never-eaten foods, because I don’t care for cream pies. It’s a texture thing. It’s also Tie One On Day, which at first glance I figured was a holiday to get drunk. But no! It’s an apron-based holiday! The idea is to make a loaf of bread or other baked good, and wrap it in an apron with an encouraging note in the pocket. Then give it to a neighbor, friend, or someone in need in your community. (I’ve still given the pie-person a stiff drink, because on this American Thanksgiving Eve, they’d probably also like to tie one on in the drinky-drinky sense.)
