May 5, 2014: I’ve always found it fascinating that Cinco de Mayo is a bigger holiday in the United States than it is in Mexico. I guess we Yanks will take just about any opportunity to celebrate drinking that we can. (See: St. Patrick’s Day.) Today is also one of two possible days for National Hoagie Day (some sources are adamant that it’s May 4, but many other sources declare it to be May 5. To be safe, we should have a sub sandwich on one day, and a grinder on the other). Last but not least, it’s National Cartoonists Day, which was established by the old cranks at the National Cartoonists Society, and nowadays they say that it’s a crap holiday and nobody should ever celebrate it. Which makes me want to celebrate it even more, because they’re such old cranks.
