As an improv comedy performer, I considered it my job to stay up on as much pop culture as humanly possible.
I didn’t want to be like one woman in a group from long ago, who didn’t know the difference between Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson. Also, one time also a long time ago, I got the suggestion of “Sleestak Love” for a song title, and I didn’t know what a Sleestak was. A fellow improviser said, “the alternate title is “The Pylon Song!” I don’t know if he was deliberately messing with me, or if he had the wrong idea about what either a Sleestak or a pylon was. I ended up singing about power lines. Never again, I vowed!
All that said, I read all of the Twilight books just to know what their deal was, so I could at least make an educated reference to them if necessary. (I also read the Fifty Shades of Gray books for the same reason.) So I can say with full knowledge that they are very, very much not my thing.
